Week of March 18, 2013

Academic focus in:

Reading:

Combine background knowledge with text clues to make an inference.

Writing:
Students will be creating a product to advertise. Students will write a persuasive piece about why someone should buy their product. After their writing is complete students will be able to create an advertisement poster or video to show off their product.

Math: Students with continue compare fractions and understand equivalent fractions.

Inquiry: Students will be focusing on magnets and where they see them in our everyday lives. Currently students are making powerpoints to display what they have learned.

Upcoming Event:

• On Friday March 22, from 6 to 8:30 Mitchell Elementary will be having an open Gym and Movie night to raise money for the 5th grade class trip to Camp Upham Woods. Admission is 1 dollar. We would love to see you there! See the below flyer for more information!

Math: Introduction to fractions.

MAP Testing: Our next test date is on Friday, February 1st. Please make sure your child has a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast.

Math: Review math strategies: word problems, double digit multiplication, and division problems.

Writing: Continue working on persuasive writing pieces.

We will be beginning to take the winter session of the MAPS (Measure of Academic Progress) testing on Thursday, January 24th. Please make sure your child has a good night's sleep and healthy breakfast, snack, and lunch.

Week of January 14, 2013

Academic focus for this week:

Reading: Continue to work on learning new information and relating it to the text.

Math: Multiplication and division strategies: breaking larger problems down, finding patterns on the multiplication table, and reviewing two-digit multiplication problems.

Writing: Continue to work on persuasive writing skills.

Please remind your child to study his/her spelling words each night.

Kemps ended their milk cap program last year. We cannot submit any more milk caps. Please do not send anymore milk caps.

We are continuing to collect Box Tops, Labels for Education/Campbell's, and Tyson labels.
